I've really tried to focus on definition here lately. Macy promoted.

Promotion is an activity that supports or provides active encouragement for the furtherance of a cause, venture, or aim.

Graduation is the receiving or conferring of an academic degree or diploma.

Macy did not have a graduation, she had a promotion. For some reason focusing on the definition makes this event seem less "growing up-ish"...

But let's cut the crap.
Macy's growing up.
She's getting older.
And come on mama, promotion is just another step closer to graduation.

It's a defense mechanism those of us use when the reality and heaviness of an event or emotion feels like too much to accept.

A purposeful choice to focus on the little defining languages that separate promotion from graduation and making sure everyone understands the differences in the word so you don't actually have to talk about your kid growing up.

It's a realization that hits your heart when you realize you have such a bigger repsonsibilty now as a parent to make sure this transition goes in the right direction instead of wallowing in your self-pity.

The moment you put on your big girl panties and hold fast to the promise that this milestone will be met with enthusiasm, excitement, and encouragement. That moment as a mom that you envelop the grief you are experiencing of a fleeting childhood and the joy of honoring "growing up."

Making the determination actually happen. Putting one foot in front of the other. Having the conversations that go with growing up. Stepping up, and not stepping down.

We're getting the hang of this growing up thing. It seems to be harder on me than anyone else.
